-S P O I L E R S-

First off, I know many of you have been feeling confused at the beginning but trust me it gets clearer as it goes. It's already making more sense isn't it? <33

My favourite thing in these chapters were getting to know more about Alex's and Darlington's past. Little bits but makes so much more sense. And let me just say, I feel SO sorry for Alex. She's right. Where were the Lethe when she was suffering and going mad? When she turned to alcohol and drugs to keep herself sane? When a FREAKING GHOST tried to rape her? She has every right to rage against the Lethe. *hugs Alex*

I absolutely wanted to hug Darlington too when he like understood Alex and let her break things. Someone please do that for me when I'm mad. Take notes.

The party scene. It left me dizzy. All that magic and craziness and ugh Alex and Darlington! I don't like ship them (I'm not as attached to the characters yet) but they had chemistry in those scenes and Bardugo writes beautifully. And that sort of dream Alex has with Darlington in bed, his fingers ending in claws thing? INTRIGUED.

And ahh he's such a gentleman that when he realized what happened, he's all like "Ugh Alex report me anmd feel free to leave" and I'm like dude you were literally drugged. Alex forgives you. Now shut up.

Also super intrigued regarding Darlington's disappearance. What exactly happened?

The scene with the gluma OMG I was on the edge of my seat. The action scenes rock.

Also can we just appreciate how freaking badass Alex is. I mean all that happened and then she smiles and goes "Now i get to try to kill them"

Turner is intriguing too. Like he's annoying. Keeps getting on Alex's nerves but I can't really blame him either. It is his case and she keeps interfering. But I wish he'd work with her rather than going nose to nose with her.

Also I love Dawes. She's like that introvert friend who is thrown into a crazy world by her extrovert friends. She's the mum friend who grumbles as she helps you then goes back to her quiet work.

-L E T    U S   D I S C U S S -

What do you think of the characters?? What do you think happened in the past? And what happened to Darlington?

Uma @books.bags.burgers  is a crazy albeit nice book dragon who when not decoding the human existence in secret labs, spends the day bemoaning her lack of pastel books and trying to make sure her TBR doesn't kill her overnight.

    Oh my GOD!

The last few chapters have been a total hell of a ride! I’m so relieved and happy that the confusion at the very beginning of the book is slowly and slowly starting to fade away.

Everything, including the houses of Lethe, Alex’s and Darlington’s past and the societies have been getting much more deeper and I’m getting more and more intrigued by it.

And yes, Alex’s past is just mind-blowing. The way Leigh is narrating her experience with her only friend Meagan and then the ghost-rape incident which gets her way from her only friend and then she getting to be friends with Mosh and Len. Len!!!!! the friendship between Len and Alex seems like a truly worth-reading one! And I really want more incidents and scenes of them together.

I also how how Leigh has portrayed the growth of Alex Stern as a character. When she is young, she’s embarrassed and introverted and extremely duligant to make friends BUT as she grows up, she manages to be so SASSY! Oh, GOd! Someone, get an Alex and let her teach me how to get this sassy!
The way that she counter-argues with Turner and then that ’’I get to kill them too" part just got me so hooked!

how did I even forget? Chapter no. 10.
In the very beginning of Chapter 10, there’s this note where Darlington says one should never go to a Manuscript party. And the moment I read that part, I just wanted to know what happened and why was the Gentleman of Lethe not wanting others to go there?

And when that acolyte of the heart drugged Darlington, I was truly bewildered! The thoughts Darlington had of Alex lying over him was INTENsE but I don’t and never will ship them in this way. I’ll always ship them in a student-mentor way where Darlington helps Alex figure out her life and what exactly she is doing in Lethe as an elder, as a guide but totally not in a romantic way!

The scene where Alex goes to Darlington’s room and she feels him there and then wants him there is truly one of the most touching scenes. Darlington’s hands turning into claws in Alex’s imagination has left me feeling that it isn’t some regular thing, it is a big warning and introduction of a plot twist that will blow away our minds!

I really like the elderly protectiveness of Darlington in the scene when Alex questions the existence of Lethe when she was suffering with the Grays, having no fucking idea who they were and how she could be away from them. And then Darlington truly acts like the gentleman of Lethe and let’s Alex break all the glasses. I wish I was at Alex’s place and had a bunch of glassware to break just to let out my frustration. I wish! 🙄

I truly devoured these four chapters of Ninth House and I’m convinced that Leigh Bardugo is truly a QUEEN 👸!!!

Well my, my, I am a little slow but phew, these 4 chapters are like light in the dark! Alex s past with her mother, of drug abuse and i mean physical abuse by a spirit 😲😲Scary shit. Mira s nonchalance and Alex es association with Turner in Tara s murder is increasing.

Where is Darlington, oh please, I do wish something happens between them, the way, Dante thinks of him in bed. The back s to their interactions are making me attracted to Darlington and his estate terribly!

And now Caihe! Lets see whats coming in chapter 11

  • Anupama C K

I agree it has become really interesting now. I want to know what happened to Darlington, somehow it feels like he is dead and needs to be ressurcted (or is it just me who feels that way) I think Alex feels responsible somehow.

Alex’s past is heartbreaking, she needed someone to help her. I love Darlington, love that he let’s Alex be Alex. Turner kind of annoys me and Dawes, I haven’t warmed upto her yet.
How is the murder connected to the societies? I have too many questions, can’t wait to read more.

Learning much more about New Haven, about Yale, about magic, about ghosts. Redefining everything that magic meant for me cuz as Alex says “Magic is never kind and forgiving”. It is hard to have this shift because come on! Harry Potter! but also a whole new perspective to think upon as all things have a dark side as well.
The story has progressed so much. We know Alex better. Her sufferings, her emotions, her fears. Still terrified of the gruesome scene between her and the ghost in the toilet. How it must have all come back to her on the night of the Aurelian ritual; how awful it must have been to relive it every time because she can see them all the time. An advantage for Lethe but how fundamentally depressing for her. It is also weird why there are no prominent flaws of Alex pointed out yet. We know terrible things happened to her and she bears the burden everywhere but what drives her? What is her coping mechanism? where does she vent? I would like to read more about that.
Darlington is just that perfect, nerdy, over-achiever gentleman. I love how Alex respects him. Whenever she thinks about him, it is either to walk through his chain of thoughts and doings or to reminisce how capable he was. That is a great way to disappear( or probably die). I like how he is so well-mannered in every instance, “Do you have to be so vulgar, Stern?”
I have absolutely no idea where the story is heading. How the past and present will converge? What does Darlington’s disappearance have to do anything with Tara’s murder? But I will ask this question. I understand the whole story stands on the suspension of disbelief that magic plays an important role in the daily occurring of the societies but I still can’t wrap my head around as for why is it so necessary? I still want to find a compelling enough reason for that.

I know a lot happened in these 5 chapters but what stayed with me was the bathroom rape incident. I knew I will be horrified by her past but I didn’t imagine this would be the kind of book that would make me cry. I felt pain and empathy for the little girl, who had so much to fear, the lonliness she felt, and how she was conflicted in the release she found in drugs. However she is still a badass because the worse she sees the stronger she gets. Like surviving the gluma, to her meant she can now fight back. Rooting for her wholeheartedly. And also for Darlington to come back, from where ever he has unwillingly gone to.
