Hullo BooksNBeyond fam!! *waves excitedly* Welcome to the first discussion of the Sorcery of Thorns readalong!! *throws confetti* Super SUPER excited for this one because SoT has been one of my favourite reads this year and I can't wait to see what you guys think! Grab your choice of beverage and let's get started!

! SPOILER ALERT ! The following post contains spoilers for the chapters 1 to 6. So unless you’ve read them, DON’T PROCEED ! SPOILER ALERT !

-S P O I L E R S-

Let us all take a moment to appreciate that this is a book about books. Isn't that the dream?? Also these are grimoires that can come to life. I mean yes of course the Maleficts are scary and dangerous but BOOKS COMING TO LIFE?? Sign me up. Belle approves.

That being said, The Book of Eyes really grossed me out?? Like actual eyes? I made the mistake of imagining it in my head and now it appears in my nightmares. Curse you overactive imagination!

Also SUPER sad that the Director died? I so wasn't expecting it! I mean when I learny Elisabeth was an orphan, I kind of thought that the Director would be like mother to her, and kind of a "powerful-help-you-with-everything" figure like Gandalf/Dumbledore? I really would have liked to see more of her.

OMG I hate Warden Finch (I refuse to call him Director). Also he seems a lot like Filch from Harry Potter? Their names match, their character matches? They both want to whip the students / apprentices, are cruel for no reason and just so annoying!

Okay so Magister Thorne. *leans forward* Are you not intrigued? I mean it was kind of cliche? Young looking powerful dude who the heroine thinks is dangerous? But this is the kind of cliche I can get on board with.

Okay omg Silas?? When he said this -

"No doubt you have heard that sorcerers bargain away their lives to demons in exchange for their power."

I was like OMG Silas is a demon?? I wish Elisabeth would realize that soon. I'm intrigued by how she's unable to process her thoughts about him. Is Nathaniel the one messing with her thoughts or Silas?

What do you think of the story so far? Which character intrigues you?

  • I was 4 pages down and it was so intriguing! I’ve always pictured myself working in a library and Elizabeth seems like your perfect clumsly, brave and confident girl.
Margaret’s descriptions are beautiful and on point.
    Also, Nathanial!! 🔥
I’m guessing he is not into this by his own will (coerced into it because of his ancestry) It’s Silas I don’t trust. He’s a demon right? And as the grimoire read, that demons may seek any chance to betray their masters.
And you’re absolutely right, I too pictured Filch as Warden Finch. Rude, loves to punish children and just so cruel.
    I can’t wait to read more! 🥺❤️

  • I started the book late at afternoon but finished 6 chapters in two hours ! Honestly speaking I never read a book with that amazing spine – chilling start !You’re right I also kind of remembered Dumbledore while reading about Director. I wish her character remained. And that Book Of Eyes….honestly imaginations was beyond my control and I am still shuddering thinking about that book.I remembered about Hagrid’s favourite book…The Monster Book Of Monsters. But still it was less frightening. And Magister is really mysterious.I think Silas played with the mind of Elisabeth ,not Magister Thorne. And you’re absolutely right Finch really remind me of Filch.Infact at first I was reading it Filch 😂.I can’t wait to read next chapters tomorrow…somehow holding my breath.

  • Truly this is one of the most interesting premises to start with.
Even though I already knew the major plot points from the book summary, still the way it turned out kept me hooked the whole time.

So I can’t fathom how much more intoxicating the story can get when I won’t know what turns the story wld take.

I really like Elisabeth’s character, obviously there is something about her that she can use grimores for secret passages, didn’t fall into sleep when everyone else in the great library of summershall was enchanted.
That’s something which really intrigued me.

Silas is someine which really intrigues me…
Am I sensing an absolutely unimaginable combination of a cinnamon roll demon..?? May be.. Hopefully we get an unlikely friendship (with Elisabeth??)

Certainly I feel I am getting some serious Nikolai vibes from Nathaniel..
I am all for it.. ❤️ Can never get tired of some snarky sass out here…

  • As of currently I am intrigued both by Silas and Nathanial as of how their true characters will unfold in the future as of now they seem to be the sauce, cool and good guys . Also the killing of the director shocked me coz frankly I too was expecting some dumbldorish stint here but never the our heroine needed to prove herself so she did bu fighting off the malefic I assume she too might belong to family of sorcerer given to her special abilities .
