Okay Day 2 of the readalong and can we all agree that this book has one of the most intriguing premise ever?? Like it hooks us right in! Grab your choice of beverage and let's get started!

! SPOILER ALERT ! The following post contains spoilers for the chapters 7 to 11 . So unless you’ve read them, DON’T PROCEED ! SPOILER ALERT !

Okay Nathaniel Thorne is officially the cutest. I'm sorry but OMG I love this dude. I call dibs on him *heart eyes* I mean let's look at some choice quotes shall we?

"I'm not decent.," she explained, hugging her arms to her chest.
"That's all right," he replied. "I hardly ever am, myself."

I'm sorry but this so reminds me of Nikolai and I just am so here for the sassy dudes.

"I thought you didn't know how to drive a carriage," she shouted over the pounding of hooves.
"Nonsense," Nathaniel shouted back, "I'm a fast learner when properly motivated."

Sorry but again, THIS SO REMINDS ME OF NIKOLAI AS WELL AS THORNE FROM LUNAR CHRONICLES? They even have similar names?

Anyway, point is I LOVES NATHANIEL THORN. You guys keep away from him *flashes swords and daggers*

Soooo Silas. Damn that's one super interesting character. So he IS a demon but kind of a morally grey character? I love these kinds of characters who make me thoughful and have me questioning my own thoughts?

OKAY THE BANTER IS A+. I don't even need a plot. Give me 300 pages of Nathaniel and Elisabeth arguing. Throw in some eye rolls and sassy comments from Silas. I'll reread that book again and again.

Can we also appreciate Katrien? She's the best friend we all want. She STOLE a grimoire and SMUGGLED it into Elisabeth's luggage. Please can I get a Katrien? Best friend goals!

ACTION SCENES! Not all authors can do action scenes well. It's so difficult to make the action leap out of the book and Margaret Rogerson TOTALLY NAILS IT! when the fiends were attcking our favourite duo, it was so adrenaline pumping! Vivid imagery like I was watching a movie! Absolutely loved it and also the descriptions of Nathaniel's magic working is so wonderful.

OKAY BUT NO THORN CANNOT SHOULD NOT LEAVE!! Like OMG even when he was leaving, it was so sassy and classy (Hey I rhymed!) and I was like DUDE JUST COME BACK? I want more Nathaniel, silas and all the delicious banter.

Okay so I received my copy of the book today and OMG CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE COVER?! I thought my eyes weren’t working coz it’s not like a normal cover?? I don’t know but whenever I look at the cover I am transported to another world! Like it looks like the book is always underwater and I’m looking at it from outside?? Does that even make sense? I LOVE THIS!

Also oh God! That action sequence! It was fluid! Like I was watching it on a screen! Even the writing goes quite poetic and flows smoothly at several points! I CANNOT stress this enough I NEED TO KNOW MORE AVOUT SILAS! I mean I know he killed Nathaniel’s father and he’s a demon andprobably has his hands grim with questionable deeds but I NEED more! (Also I kinda picture Tomitheé Chalemet playing him so that’s a whole other thing I need to unpack). Nathaniel, I like him, I like the wit and sarcasm and I feel like he’s hiding behind it (which is quite common in witty characters) Also this feels strangely like Winternight series when the book talks about the Otherworldly beings and I have to consciously make myself not think of Vasya and Morozko (ugh).

Also, also WHO IS THIS NEW LADY-DEMON AAH!!!

I’m pretty sure I had more things to say about this day but I can’t hold on to my thoughts coz aah!

Yess.. couldn’t agree more.. Elizabeth is a mixture of Belle and Rapunzel.. And Nathaniel is my sweetheart.. Maybe we can share?? Or not!!! I love him… And Katrien is awesome.. that one drop of love made me grin like she’s my friend and I’m super proud of her.. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next.. ❤️

The action was A+. It flowed well and had real stakes that made the reader care. It was not inconsequential as action in the beginning of the story tends to be.

Silas becomes more intriguing by the second. Don’t know if I buy the whole very strict hierarchy and desires of demons.

Need to explore the relationship between Silas and Nathaniel, as well as the exact nature of their “agreement”. There has to be some mystery over there.

That chancellor guy is creepy af. Definitely something brewing under his hood. Also, name-dropping the Director seemed a very direct but subtle move on his part. Very suspicious of him and keeping my eyes peeled.

Also, the white streak in Nathaniel’s hair reminds of so much of Fjord (from Critical Role) that I have to constantly remind myself to envision him a human and not a half-orc. They also have other things in common like, being charismatic and dealing with magic (although Fjord is a warlock, but he did make a pact for his sorcery so 🤷).

The chancellor guy seems super creepy and probably has a lot of secrets. Also, name-dropping the Director makes me even more suspicious of him.

Silas might be one of the demons that I like. Although, I’m not sure whether I like the whole strictly defined hierarchy of demons.

Need to explore more of Nathaniel and Silas’ relationship and the nature of their “agreement”. Also, Nathaniel’s streak of grey hair reminds me so much of Fjord (from Critical Role) that I have to remind myself to envision him as a human rather than a half-orc.

Still don’t know why Elizabeth’s last name is Scrivener and people keep referring to her with that name. Gosh, I need to know.
