The Mercies Readalong - Day #2

! SPOILER ALERT ! The following post contains spoilers from Chapter 6 - 12. So unless you’ve read the chapters, DON’T PROCEED ! SPOILER ALERT !

-S P O I L E R S-

I find Ursa a more engaging protagonist than Maren. Do you guys feel so too? I definitely felt for Ursa throughout these chapters. First being blindsided by such a sudden marriage to a mean man, having to leave behind her sister, feeling fearful of her nights with her husband, afraid to talk to the Captain in front of her husband, having to give away the little money she had and feeling trapped and I just really feel for her.

Also I like how her character is already shifting and growing. How she mentions what an extroverted child she used to be and insisted on being around people but now she uses silence as a weapon. There were some scenes where we literally feel her personality shift and turn; the conversation with the Captain, when her husband says he wants to learn Norwegian, her day out with Casper and many such instances. And I really hope she gets to see her sister again someday.

Also I like how Maren's bisexuality is slowly shown to us even when it's not directly stated. She mentions how Dag made her feel but also we get to see how other women make her feel. The feeling she has to be close to Diinna, the flush she feels when she accidentally wipes Kirsten's chin are all small scenes written so wonderfully.

So, Absalom. I already hate the guy. I hated him so much when he took away Ursa's money, making her feel lost. And I just know I'm going to hate him even more as the story progresses.

Also the little scene where when Ursa calls the Sami, Lapps and the Captain firmly corrects her? I really like the Captain.

Also am I the only one scared for Kirsten? It's a book about Witch trials and here's an amazing, headstrong and badass women living in a village that's soon going to be taken over by the Commissioner. I am honestly VERY worried for her.

What are your thoughts about Ursa? Which are the characters you coonect to? Who is a character you want to see more of?

So liked the chapters in today’s readalong. The story is already giving me chills. And Absalom is already giving Dolores Umbridge vibes … completely detest him. And though the character ghraph has increased. I yearning to know more about Sami customs and Diinna too. And love the badass vibes Kirsten gives.

I think I don’t have much to add here. 😄 It’s like you read my mind ♥️. Ursa is so adorable, loved the dynamic between her and sister. I hate Absalom and love the Captain, obviously.♥️ I didn’t get what is happening between Diina and her baby though. I can’t wait for Ursa and Maren to meet. I hope they are going to make one hell of a combo whatever be their relationship. Did Kirsten already know about Maren being bisexual? 🤔 Why did she suddenly invite Maren to her in yesterday’s section?

Ursa was definitely a force to be reckoned with. She speaks her mind, albeit to her. I felt more connected to her – thoughts, body and soul than I did with Maren. However, with changing intensity of Maren towards the new wife already, I sense more drama.

Can I use a whip to slash Mr. Cornett off? He annoyed me with absoluteness. It was like, he’s using her as a vessel for his pleasure, still I am not too sure how to feel about him? At one time, he calls Ursa beautiful – the next, he takes the money from her. I loved seeing him seething with jealousy whenever Ursa was with Captain. The jerk didn’t even acknowledge her while spending time with her but then suddenly, he wishes to learn Norwegian? Yeah, sure!

Albeit for short, I think I loved the little exchange between Casper – Captain & Ursa. I shipped the Captain greatly – a father figure to the main protagonist.

Can we comment on how mesmerized Maren was with the yellow bright colors, Ursa showcased? Ha.

I am genuinely worrying myself how will the captain start with this whole bringing women to kirke and no more of that.

Last but not the least, I may have shed a tear or so for Agnette and Ursa. That sisterly bond gave me a chill to my very nerves and bones. crossing fingers
