I find Ursa a more engaging protagonist than Maren. Do you guys feel so too? I definitely felt for Ursa throughout these chapters. First being blindsided by such a sudden marriage to a mean man, having to leave behind her sister, feeling fearful of her nights with her husband, afraid to talk to the Captain in front of her husband, having to give away the little money she had and feeling trapped and I just really feel for her.
Also I like how her character is already shifting and growing. How she mentions what an extroverted child she used to be and insisted on being around people but now she uses silence as a weapon. There were some scenes where we literally feel her personality shift and turn; the conversation with the Captain, when her husband says he wants to learn Norwegian, her day out with Casper and many such instances. And I really hope she gets to see her sister again someday.
Also I like how Maren's bisexuality is slowly shown to us even when it's not directly stated. She mentions how Dag made her feel but also we get to see how other women make her feel. The feeling she has to be close to Diinna, the flush she feels when she accidentally wipes Kirsten's chin are all small scenes written so wonderfully.
So, Absalom. I already hate the guy. I hated him so much when he took away Ursa's money, making her feel lost. And I just know I'm going to hate him even more as the story progresses.
Also the little scene where when Ursa calls the Sami, Lapps and the Captain firmly corrects her? I really like the Captain.
Also am I the only one scared for Kirsten? It's a book about Witch trials and here's an amazing, headstrong and badass women living in a village that's soon going to be taken over by the Commissioner. I am honestly VERY worried for her.
