Welcome BnB fam! grab your copy of The Starless Sea, a cup of tea with honey and snuggle into your cozy blanket and let's get started with this discussion!

! SPOILER ALERT ! The following post contains spoilers for Book 1 - Sweet sorrows of The Starless Sea. So unless you’ve read them, DON’T PROCEED ! SPOILER ALERT !

-S P O I L E R S-

Can we all first appreciate how gloriously beautiful Erin Morgenstern's writing is? thanks. SERIOUSLY THOUGH. Her writing is so delicious I munched through the book greedily. (ahem I swear i'm mostly normal) BUT BEAUTIFUL WRITING AHHH

I am living for the Harry Potter references. SORTING RANDOM BOOK CHARACTERS INTO HOGWARTS HOUSES IS MY FAVOURITE THING EVER so it's always great when authors help us. The author helpfully mentions Ezra is a Ravenclaw and now the Ravenclaw half of my Gryffinclaw is rejoicing!

All the interconnected stories. I love how there are multiple stories in there but pretty much everything stands out and just pulls you in spectacularly? I love books that are so freaking immersive. AND OF COURSE WE ALSO HAVE ALL THE EXPERIENTIAL MERCH OF EVER!

At page 8 we have this glorious wax-stamp set that just looks so royal! I mean even the colour of the wax with it's gold highlights is BEAUTIFUL. I can't wait to use it just about everywhere. Letters, envelopes, boxes, my head? EVERYWHERE.

I love that it has the sign of a bee which is supremely important in the book. We've already had the bee seals and the real bees of The Starless Sea. I'm excited to see their role in the story!

THEN THE GLORIOUS JOURNAL AT PAGE 16 EEEP! It has the three symbols that are so important in the book - the bee, the key and sword.

The keys interest me a lot tbh! That room of keys? How there was once just one big key but now there are many? I bet anything there are scenes with various amazing doors being opened so we can have more of Erin Morgenstern's hauntingly gorgeous descriptions.

And of course DOORS! That scene with the girl painting a door and meeting a woman who happened to be Ezra's mother? I loved that chapter. And also the scene with Ezra seeing the door for the first time and not going through? Safe to say all the door scenes gave me chills! And absolutely awesome Narnia vibes too by the way. I NEEDS MORE.

And it's just for that, we have included a smol wooden door for page 62 (The page where the importance of The Starless Sea doors are mentioned). And stay sharp and keep an eye out on the Instagram page for there will be a fun activity involving the door. I have been using it as a bookmark while I read btw!

Page 75 brings a KEY! Also did you guys realize the key is also a bottle opener? I didn't until Papiya told me. I was planning to add it to a bronze chain and wear it as a badass pendant (I'm still gonna do that in case you were wondering!)

And of course the key denotes the page that talks about all they keys and what they mean in this lush world Morgenstern has created.

The next product IS an actual pendant and it stands for the chain and pendant that Dorian gives Ezra in order to fool the people and steal the book. Also did you guys notice the detail on the handle?

Also DORIAN! What are your thoughts? He's a bit pretentious in my opinion? But now that Ezra is trapped without him, I wish Dorian would find him soon!

Also can we all give Kat a big cheer? I know we saw only a few pages of her but I absolutely adore this cinnamon roll of a girl and will 120% kill to protecc her.

SO THOUGHTS??? What are your thoughts about the characters? What are you hoping to see in book two? What are you liking so far? Do you love the writing like me?

  • Okay since I’ve read Night Circus I thought I knew what the writing is going to be like but heavens! Erin’s writing takes me by surprise every time. Before I even begin to get into the story and appreciate all its glory I want to go on and on about the writing. Most books feel like you’re being told a story, which is great, but when Erin writes I feel like the story is within me. Like I’m discovering a part of me that was always there, hidden but she’s helping me unravel it and I love that feeling. Like I’m floating and the words carry me to a new, magical world.
Now that I am done trying to describe what this writing does to me and failing, let me get into the story. Sweet Sorrows, with the first two words, I was sold. More than I want to know what happens next in Zachary’s (never Zach) life next which is pretty intriguing in itself, I want to read these seemingly unrelated stories. These little nuggets that tie this book together. I want to know about the Pirate and the girl, the acolyte and everything else.
Also, can I just say Zachary and his sarcasm are so relatable I feel like I’ve found my twin in him! And Dorian oh god! The perfect match to my Zachary because let’s all not pretend that they’re not going to totally and hopelessly fall in love.
BUT BUT Mirabel is life. She is the source of my life for this book, I literally SLOW DOWN reading her parts because I want to cherish each moment she’s in the scene.
Oh and the REVEALS in this book, when things connect I am dumbstruck even when I expect them for the beauty of it all is way too much for me. The gifts are all so beautiful!! I always wanted a wax seal and now I have it (ugly crying), and the door that I get to paint! The key is probably the key to the door where I’ll lock all my emotions after being done with this book. AND THE PENDANT!!! I have no words for it. This is all so magical AAAAH!

  • This is my first book from author, I haven’t read Night Circus. And I’m blown!! First of all her writing style is brilliant. And books in books!!! Stories in stories!!! WOW!! And a character we readers can totally relate to, double Wow. I love the first book, particularly the Innovation in storytelling part with all gaming and storytelling discussion, because I love interactive and role playing games personally. The library – fantasia ( in Zachary’s language) reminds me of Sorcery of Thorns ,and the part of New Orleans reminds me of The Beautiful. I loved the gifts; I mean they are 10/5. Specially the stamp, I never had one and this one is beautiful. And I’m definitely going for The Night Circus after finishing this book,because…..well…..I just have to.

  • The book starts out a little slow (or maybe I mean disjointed), but it captures my interest soon. Right away I can tell that this is going to be a very different, and perhaps even a difficult read. Though I cannot be sure till I reach the end, but it does seem like a book I would like to re-read; a kind of book that reveals more when read again.
I found some of my thoughts echoed by different characters in the subsequent pages. For example I thought it’s as if one short story is unfolding into another; or that I wonder if these can be called chapters! Probably some of my thought process is like the author’s, or maybe she is able to guide my thoughts in the direction she wishes.
Once I reached the pre decided page of the gift unwrapping, I have mostly been able to guess the item. However still amazed by its simplicity and beauty.
Only difference so far i have gleaned is that perhaps the orientation of the bee, key and sword are vertical rather than horizontal.
Also I almost forgot, I absolutely love the many literary references sprinkled throughout, especially in the masked party scenario and otherwise too.
I have not read the Night Circus and had no idea what kind of writing to expect. Her writing evokes clear images in my head, and the broken story fragments leave many questions and guesses in my mind. I am thoroughly enjoying the book. Wondering if I should read it slower than three readathon to make it last longer!!

  • You don’t believe me that i was bit hesitant to pick night circus coz of the mixed reviews. However, i went blindly and picked up The Starless Sea without reading the blurb and i totally swept away and totally in love with the story right from the beginning. I love the idea of having three different books narrated in a different ways and the way story built has grasped be away into the story as if I’m right there with the characters and i can feel them. All the characters come to life and coming to the characters i love the chemistry of the pirate and the girl and i love Ezra he is a sweet heart and he is going to be my first bookish boyfriend for 2020 and ofcourse how can i forget about the chirpy and fun-loving girl Kat…. I’m eagerly waiting what happens in book 2. Right after finishing this book am gonna right away pick the night circus…
